Statement following meeting with European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová

Social Platform statement following meeting with European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová, 31 January 2020

“Following our meeting today with European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová, we commend her commitment to defending the rule of law – an issue that is vital to defending civic space.

“Social Platform, as the largest network of European rights- and value-based civil society organisations working in the social sector, is advocating for policies that bring social progress to all in the European Union. We had important discussions on how to bring Europe closer to people, including through the upcoming Conference on the Future of Europe, and how to protect and promote the values of equality, democracy and transparency.

“We agreed that organised civil society has a key role to play in the future of Europe, and that strong democracies have vibrant and diverse civil society. This includes organisations who represent the most marginalised and discriminated, and those living in poverty.

“Vice-President Jourová can count on Social Platform and our members as strong allies to move these issues forward to the benefit of all people in Europe, leaving no-one behind.”
