SOLIDAR: Together for Social Europe

Health and social services are a motor for job creation in Europe – but it needs good maintenance

On 8 January, the European Commission published its ‘Employment and Social Situation Quarterly Review: December 2014‘ giving an overview of developments of employment and social conditions in the EU over the last three months. As Commissioner Thyssen stated: “Though the employment growth we witness now is positive, it is still too small and too slow. Especially long-term unemployment remains a crucial challenge for the EU.”

SOLIDAR calls on the European Commission and member states to maintain adequate, high quality, accessible and affordable social services in times of tightened public budgets. As the crisis has shown, social services play a fundamental role in ensuring effective and efficient social protection. They promote social inclusion and thereby minimise the risk of poverty and thereby significantly cushioned the impact of the economic crisis.
