Volonteurope: Volonteurope statement on EU referendum

On 23 June, the British public will be asked to decide whether the UK should remain in the European Union.

As a European network of 50 plus members promoting volunteering, active citizenship and social justice, Volonteurope believes that the UK should stay in the EU.

The current debate has been dominated by arguments about the impact of EU membership on the UK economy and security. Volonteurope takes a broader view, championing the social rights of citizens across Europe.

Volonteurope President, Oonagh Aitken, said:

“Volonteurope, along with a number of other European networks, has been working for institutional change for a number of years, particularly with regard to citizen participation and transparency.

We believe it is by staying in the EU that the UK can work for a real social Europe. We are also concerned that a number of social rights, currently guaranteed by EU law, would be left vulnerable to repeal or amendment.

Freedom of movement, another important benefit of EU membership, could also be eroded, and with it the opportunities for volunteering, learning and intercultural experience it affords.

We believe that the UK’s continued membership of the EU is the best way to protect citizens’ rights and secure a better future for all Europeans.

Building a social Europe means joining forces to push for change within the Union, rather than leaving it.”
