I am reaching out to all in solidarity & in the hope that nobody has been personally affected by yesterday’s attacks at Maalbeek and Zaventem.

On Monday many of us attended DG Employment’s Annual Convention on Inclusive Growth. I sincerely hope all those members of ours travelling back to their respective countries are also safe.

We made a strong plea to our EU leaders to stay committed to a strong Pillar of Social Rights that can make a real positive difference to peoples lives and reverse the current trends of disinvestment in social welfare & services, health and education.

The terror attacks will further heighten security and fear. But we will only address the root causes of violent extremism in the long-term, if we also confront the rising tide of inequality, fragmentation, alienation and indifference that characterise our societies today.

Our voices of compassion, solidarity and inclusiveness need to be heard more loudly than ever. We will build the future of Europe not on “better functioning economies” but how we treat one another.

Wishing you all strength & wisdom during this difficult time.
