Invitation to lunch debate on joining forces to challenge the dominant economic model in Europe

Social Platform launched in November a cycle of lunch debates with guest speakers which have as a common theme the “social dimension of the European Economic policies”, open for members and partners.

In the first debate we discussed “Mapping future scenarios for the Eurozone” with Prof. Maria João Rodrigues. In the second we tackled key challenges to counterweight private interest lobbying of the financial industry with Thierry Philipponnat, Finance Watch’s Secretary General. In the third CECOP-CICOPA presented its documentary “Together. How cooperatives show resilience to the crisis”.

You are invited to our next lunch-time debate, taking place on January 14 (12h00-14h00) at Social Platform premises, square de Meeus 18, 1050 Brussels.

  • THE TOPIC: Joining forces to challenge the dominant economic model in Europe and its impact on small producers and workers

Sergi Corbalán will share his thoughts on how the dominant economic model in Europe has also negative impacts on small producers and workers, both in the North and in the South. He will also present the “Common Cause” thinking on how the use of values (and how we communicate about them) may help social actors to achieve change. Sergi would like to explore possibilities for common messages between social actors from the North and the South, in preparation of and beyond the European Parliament elections of 2014.

  • THE SPEAKER: Mr Sergi Corbalán, Fair Trade Advocacy Office Executive Director

Sergi Corbalán is a jurist by training (Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Université de Genève) with a Masters of Arts in International Politics (Université Libre de Bruxelles) and additional studies in International Trade and Economics at the World Trade Institute. He has over 12 years experience in political advocacy at EU and global level, in particular on trade, development, human rights and consumer policies.
