On 11 February, the European Commission adopted its 2025 work programme, setting out initiatives and actions for year ahead.
Social Platform is disappointed that the strong focus on productivity and competition has led to a de-prioritisation of the EU’s social agenda.
Social Platform’s Secretary General, Laura de Bonfils, reacts below:

“The focus on industry and competitiveness in the new EU Work Programme misses one crucial aspect: the wellbeing of people. Without a strong social agenda, President von der Leyen will fail to build the future of Europe that we all need – one that champions resilient, inclusive and fair societies. There are high expectations on the action plan implementing the EU’s social compass scheduled towards the end of the year. However, without a single legislative file in 2025 that tackles social issues, the European Commission sends a clear signal to people across Europe that social rights are secondary.
With such a disappointing social agenda outlined in this Work Programme, Social Platform calls on all EU policymakers to bring investment in social inclusion to the heart of their competitiveness agendas and ensure that the new European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan delivers for all.
Social Platform demands a full and inclusive consultation process that truly reflects the needs and challenges faced by all who call for a more social Europe.”
