Social Platform call on the Parliament to support the European Institute for Gender Equality

On March 12 Social Platform called on the European Parliament's Committee on Budgetary Control to support the continuity of an independent European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) to promote gender equality, fighting discrimination based on sex and raising awareness about gender equality issues in the EU. On March 19 members of the Committee will discuss a discharge report (proposals to merge the institute with the Fundamental Rights Agency).

Why the Parliament shouldsupport the EIGE:

  •     As long as 50% of the population experience gender inequality we need a strong political will and a specific focus on gender by having a strong independent Institute for Gender Equality;
  •     As long as 7 women die every day because of domestic violence in Europe and women make 16% less per hour than men for equal work we need a specific Institute with its own mandate and necessary resources to support Member States to implement the EU’s gender equality policies and gender mainstreaming strategies according to Article 8 and 10 of the Treaty;
  •     EIGE conduct specialized work which is not duplication by any other EU Agency. They are the only one who work on a Gender Equality Index, the indicators of the Beijing Platform of Action together with the EU Presidencies, harmonizing gender statistics, data and resources across all the EU through a ‘one-stop shop’ as well as developing reports and recommendations which serves as a ground for the EU Council Decisions.
