United we blossom!

Today is a big day for us: the result of long months of dialogue between social NGOs, trade unions, and environment and development organisations. We, together as the Spring Alliance, are presenting to all the democratic political parties in the Parliament our Manifesto “A better Europe now” which proposes six priorities for the new European Parliament and future Commission.

We are not happy with the way the EU is managed right now. Last week our friends from the trade unions gathered 50,000 people in Brussels “Fighting for: Investments, Quality jobs, Equality”. At our event this afternoon, we will say that current policies have not succeeded in solving the crisis and have led to citizens increasingly losing their trust in their political leaders and in the European Project.

But we are not losing hope of what the EU could be, if it put people and the planet first. Our manifesto proposes six solutions for the new European Parliament and Commission: Improve Democracy, Build More Cohesive and Equal Societies, Ensure Quality Employment for All, Promote Environmental Sustainability, Live Up to our Development Commitments, and Revise Economic Policies.

This is a good project and I would like to share with you the beauty of this flower that symbolises the Spring Alliance. It is one of the few Platforms to have gathered key stakeholders who can integrate the concerns of employment and social policies, as well as environment and development policies.  We try to think about a future with a green transition that can respect and support employment and social rights and we also think beyond our borders taking into account the concerns of our friends outside of the EU.

It is a beautiful project that needs to be supported: it is a provider of concrete solutions to solve Europe’s problems and thereby restore citizens’ trust and confidence.

If you are there with us this afternoon, I will be happy to see you at the Economic and Social Committee, if you’re not we will make sure that you are kept informed. It’s only the beginning.

Let’s engage!
